In 1866, at the age of 19, Ludovic de Beauvoir undertook with his childhood friend, the Duke of Penthièvre, a trip around the world, which inspired three works: this one devoted to Australia, the second on Java, Siam and Canton and the third, published in 1872, devoted to Japan and the United States.
