“He stands absolutely in the first rank as a writer of ghost stories.” — from the Prologue by M. R. James.
Attractive copy of this landmark collection of the short supernatural fiction of J. S. Le Fanu, edited by M. R. James and with a prologue by him and his substantial bibliography of Le Fanu’s novels and tales (pp. 265-77). James “gleaned” the tales of Le Fanu from “extinct” periodicals, “the result of a fairly long investigation.” James had been a champion of Le Fanu since his youth, and this collection was an important stage in the revival of critical and popular interest in Le Fanu. “That he is now thought of as at all a major figure is in good measure owing to MRJ’s advocacy of him” (Pfaff, Montague Rhodes James, p. 417).
