Item #321822

A rare catalogue of the first major Surinamese exhibition, including exhibits of natural history, mineralogy, botany, agriculture, industry, and history. The aim of the exhibition was to boost the colony's economy, just three years after the final end to slavery. Slavery was abolished in Suriname in 1863, though freed slaves were required to stay on their plantations on a contract basis for another ten years.

The October 1876 exhibition took place in the guesthouse and on the adjacent yard of the Masonic lodge Concordia in Paramaribo, with nearly 7,000 visitors attending. After the exhibition many of the exhibits were shipped to the Netherlands, though the taxidermy, rare stones and historical objects were included in the collection of the Colonial Museum.
