Journeying up the Nile during the winter of 1873-4 Amelia Edwards was so taken with her surroundings and the historical nature of Egypt and Nubia that she became immersed in the study of Egyptology. It took her two years of extensive work to produce this book checking contents, accuracy, illustrations, etc. She had been a novelist with some success but set this aside to become an eminent Egyptologist. She was a major contributor in the founding of the Egyption Exploration Fund to save antiquities and spent the remainder of her life lecturing, travelling and writing about it. On her death she funded a chair of Egyptology at the University College, London with Flinders Petrie, the also eminent Egyptologist to fill it.
