The First Tammany Hall Building
Tammany Hotel [albumen photograph of Park Row in Printing House Square showing the Tammany Hotel with a group of men in front, with signs for Tammany Hall M.[ichael] Halpin, L.S. Lawrence & Co., Sunday Times, Pewter Mug and on the far left in Hebrew "Kosher" Restaurant].
New York: c. 1865.
Matted, with later ink caption on the mat: "Park Row and Beekman Sts. in 1854 Now the Sun Building". 18-1/4 x 11 inches sight size. The First Tammany Hall Building. Repaired tear upper left, some fading. Framed and glazed Item #320972
The early inscription on the mat identifies the image as taken in 1854, suggesting this large albumen print made from an earlier glass plate negative. Another example in the collection of the City of New York suggests a date in circa 1885; however the Sun took over the building in 1868 making an earlier dating more likely.
