Private sporting club founded in 1886, with a membership limited to one hundred, including Pierpont Morgan, Wm. K. Vanderbilt, Wm. Rockefeller, Erastus Corning, and Marshall Field; with grounds comprising twenty-two square miles. “Since that time, good taste, energy and wealth have turned beautiful Jekyl island into a little paradise of comfort and health giving relaxation.” Charles Lanier, whose name appears on the title page, was the long-time president of the Jekyl Island Club.
In 1910 the club was the site of the secret meeting at which the Federal Reserve was established. The club continued until the end of 1942.
The photogravures depict club house and cottages, golf course and grounds, and other scenes. Three depict cycling and beach sports; three are hunting related; one view of golfing shows golfers with their African American caddies; and two portray John Cain, an African-American driver.
This sumptuous illustrated guide to the club was first issued in 1911; a slightly revised third edition was produced in 1919. All are RARE.
