An early issue, complete with its table and engraved plate, and in the original wrappers: rare thus. "This was the most ambitious project in magazine publication yet attempted in this country" (Evans). Publication began in September 1786 and continued to May 1787, before changing its name to the Universal Asylum and Columbian Magazine.

Contributions to this issue include several works by Benjamin Rush, as well as several articles relating to natural history discoveries in America, including the mammoth bones found in Kentucky, a description of a rattle snake and a submission concerning a giant sturgeon.
