McLeod was ship's surgeon on the Alceste in Amherst's failed mission embassy to China. Places visited include Liu-Kiu (Okinawa), Korea, Manila, Macao. The Alceste was wrecked on the return voyage and the men, left on an island while Amherst sailed to Batavia to get help, were set upon by Malay pirates before being rescued. This was one of the most popular Far East travel books of the first half of the 19th century.
