Kingsley Amis got to know Ian Fleming while contemplating an essay on spy fiction, which grew into The James Bond Dossier, published in 1965, the same year as The Man with the Golden Gun, which Amis read in manuscript at the suggestion of editor William Plomer. Amis also wrote The Book of Bond or, Every Man His Own 007, published under the pseudonym Bill Tanner; and in 1968, the first posthumous continuation of the Bond series was published by Jonathan Cape, Colonel Sun, written by Amis under the pseudonym "Robert Markham".
