Manfred Eigen (1927-2019) was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1967 for “studies of extremely fast chemical reactions, effected by disturbing the equilibrium by means of very short pulses of energy” (shared with Ronald Norrish and George Porter).

The present draft manuscript discusses biochemical, physical, and philosophical aspects of life and living, including the absence of a clear boundary between living and unliving, with reference to viruses, reproduction, thermodynamics, and evoltuion, and concluding with a citation from Democritus, “Alles, was im Weltall existiert, ist die Frucht von Zufall und Notwendigkeit” (Everything existing in the Universe is the fruit of chance and necessity)

With a signed Sonderdruck of Eigen’s article “Zeugen der Genesis — Versuch einer Rekonstruktion der Urformen des Lebens au ihren in den Biomolekülen hinterlassenen Spuren” from the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft Jahrbuch 1979.
