Item #315370

A letter from the Senator of Vermont to fellow Republican, and U.S. Representative from New York, Simeon B. Chittenden. Reading in part: I have just rec'd from Mr. William Allen Butler a letter stating that he has examined the technical point I referred to, and is satisfied that there is no danger in the respect I mentioned."

In 1879, Chittenden and New York Attorney, William Allen Butler, brought a test case before the Surpeme Court to decide whether Congress had the authority to issue legal paper money in peace time. The case was finally argued before the court by Edmunds and Butler in 1884.
