Judy Lynn del Rey (1983-1986) started her career as an editor at Galaxy magazine. She moved to Ballantine Books in 1973 and established the Del Rey Books imprint in 1977. “As editor-in-chief of Del Rey Books, she demonstrated an extraordinary gift for marketing sf and fantasy to an unprecedentedly large audience, and her releases often hit the US bestseller lists. At the time of her death, she had become the dominant figure in US sf and fantasy publishing” (SFE).
Asimov described her as “incredibly intelligent, quick-witted, hard driving” and "generally recognised (especially by me) as one of the top editors in the business."
Her husband Lester del Rey was a science fiction author and editor, and a member of the Trap Door Spiders, a literary circle that was the model for Asimov's tales of the Black Widowers.
