Perhaps Burroughs' finest novel after Naked Lunch, Cities of the Red Night intercuts a detective novel plot with scenes in the ill-fated pirate colony of Captain Mission on Madagascar with acerbic wit and visionary imagery.

The proof bears on its cover and title page a darkly ironic subtitle, “A Boy’s Book”, not present in the published book.

Presented by the author to Victor Bockris: “For Victor Bockris with all best wishes and friendship, William S. Burroughs October 23, 1980”

Bockris produced a Festschrift for Burroughs’ sixty-fifth birthday, My files on William Burroughs, literary soldier, private pilot (1979), a compendium of interviews with Burroughs; and he later wrote With William Burroughs A Report from the Bunker (1981).
