Though he may not have coined the slogan "go west, young man...," Horace Greeley (1811-1872), founder of the New-York Tribune, which is considered among the great newspapers of its time, is certainly credited with popularizing the phrase. In this short letter to fellow newspaper man Obidiah A. Bowie, Greeley informs his life-long friend and correspondent, that he will "go west."
