Auden writes to literary scholar N. John Hall regarding the English wit Sydney Smith: "... I don't recognise the Sydney Smith quotation. The sentence "What happiness ... domestic shackles" could well be by him, but, if so, certainly meant sarcastically. Smith was very respectable in his domestic life." Auden closes by adding, "As a Trollope fan, I shall look forward to your edition of The New Zealander." Hall's edition of Trollope's The New Zealander appeared in 1972 (Oxford).
