Autograph Note, signed (“Ech-Pi-El”), to Clark Ashton Smith, postmarked De Land, Fla., 1 May 1934, with a Typed Note, signed (“AR ECH BEI”), from Robert H. Barlow.

[De Land, Florida: 1934].

On a picture postcard with printed caption A Beautiful Southern Sunset Scene, and HPL holograph addendum, “Explored Savannah 8-1/2 hrs on my trip down, grand place”. Eleven lines in ink (75 words), plus address; nine lines typed (55 words). 3-1/2 x 5-1/2 inches. Fine. Provenance: Roy A. Squires (in one of his card folders). Unpublished (Squires did not photocopy postcards). Item #314509

The first communication from Lovecraft to Smith during his long stay with young Robert H. Barlow in Florida in the spring of 1934, anticipating in miniature — “86º here yesterday, grandpa is in his element” — the expansive reports in subsequent letters, with allusions to Smith’s tales; and with Barlow’s nine-line message, partly about cats, concluding “he has found the Great Love of his life.”

A remarkable joint message from Lovecraft and Barlow.
