Inscribed in green ink on the front free endpaper: "Especially for Kay Boyle –– on a happy meeting with Maria Leiper today –– Sincerely, Langston Hughes New York, April 12, 1957". Boyle and Hughes had both been friends of Nancy Cunard, and Hughes would later contribute an essay to a tribute to Cunard that Boyle co-edited. Maria Leiper was Hughes' editor at Simon & Schuster. Boyle successfully advocated for Hughes induction into the National Institute of Arts and Letters in 1961.
"One of the most successful collaborations between a great writer and a great photographer ever published" (Roth 101). Hughes' text, spoken as Sister Mary Bradley, with DeCarava's photos, provide "a vital corrective to a book like Roll, Jordan, Roll" (Parr/Badger).
