Geneva: Spengler et Cie; Godefroy Engelmann, ca. 1840.
63 lithographs by Spengler et Cie and Engelmann, after Jean DuBois and Jean Louis Tirpenne, eight measuring 6-3/4 x 8-3/4 inches, the rest 4-1/2 x 5-1/4 inches, mounted on album leaves. Oblong 8vo. Contemporary Simier cathedral mosaic binding of full dark purple morocco, covers with gilt-stamped corner pieces and central panel with red, green, and yellow morocco onlays, gilt spine with raised band and colored onlays, ornate brass catches (lacking clasp). Fine. Provenance: Berthellemot, Confiseur (engraved ticket, Palais Royal, Paris). Item #313403
A beautiful example of a Simier mosaic binding à la cathedrale enclosing an album of lithographed views of Switzerland. The album was originally purcashed from the Parisian confectioner Berthellemot, whose engraved ticket is on the front free endpaper. We trace one other Simier album with the Berthellemot ticket; it seems the shop kept a stock of gift bindings among its confections — the ticket advertises "d'objets d'étrenneal"
