New York: Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 1970.
First edition, limited signed issue, no. ix of 250 copies numbered and signed by Berryman. 96 pp. 1 vols. Small 4to. Purple cloth spine and boards, a.e.g. Fine in black cloth slipcase. Stefanik A20.I.a. Item #313162
Numbered "ix" on the colophon page by Berryman, this was evidently one of the author's copies retained for presentation. A letter by publisher Robert Giroux, quoted in Stefanik's bibliography of Berryman, explains how the presentation copies were numbered: "The entire limited edition consisted of 250 copies, signed by the author. Most of them were numbered with arabic numerals, but I recall that some of the presentation copies were lettered by Berryman, not only from A to J, but from Alpha to Kappa, Roman numeral I to V, lower case i to v, and perhaps others. This was the author's joke. No record was kept, of course, since these were his presentation copies, but they were all included in the total of 250 copies …" Although this copy bears Berryman's idiosyncratic numbering system, there is no further evidence of it being a presentation copy. Stefanik notes that "none of the presentation copies have been seen"
