Notable biography of German pioneer of organic chemistry, Justus von Liebig (1803-1873), published following centennial celebrations in Darmstadt and Giessen. An important part of the nineteenth-century growth of the German chemical industry, upon foundations established by Liebig’s discoveries, is the story of the Merck firm. Georg Merck, one of the three sons of Emanuel Merck, was a pupil of Liebig; he and his brothers expanded the family firm into an international business group.
