Item #312924

Early collected edition of the tragedies of Casimire Delavigne (1793-1843), who gained fame with his Messéniennes (1818) and was elected to the Académie française in 1825.
Les Vêpres Siciliennes, first performed in 1819, is in a new edition, with a title page dated 1829. Le Paria is a second edition, with title page dated 1821; and Marino Faliero is dated 1829.

Although Delavigne’s Messéniennes included verses on Byron, the tragedy of Marino Faliero bears no resemblance to Byron’s drama of the same title, and Delavigne’s Doge is unlike Byron’s majestic figure.
His masterpiece is condered to be Louis XI, first performed in 1831.
The general title is dated 1833.
