The famous schoolmaster and editor Thomas Farnaby (c.1575-1647) first published his Lucan with line-by-line commentary in 1618. Editions combining his notes with the text edited by Dutch scholar Hugo Grotius first appeared in 1624, and become the most popular way for Lucan's epic to be printed in Europe in the 18th century.
