A crisp autograph by the prolific American fiction and non-fiction author, Mary Virginia Terhune (nee Hawes) (1830-1922), who wrote under the penname Marion Harland. Harland is known for her best-selling women’s novels, including her first novel, Alone (1854), and and for her popular homemaking manuals, such as Common Sense in the Household: A Manual of Practical Housewifery. She was also the mother of author, journalist, and dog breeder, Albert Payson Terhune.
