Item #311648

The deluxe issue of this beautifully produced facsimile in color of Gauguin's original manuscript of his collaboration with the Symbolist poet Charles Morice. A version of the collaboration appeared in Gauguin's lifetime, but "Gauguin recopied and amplified his manuscript, adding watercolors, woodcuts, and an occasional photograph," and it is this manuscript, now in the Louvre, on which the present facsimile is based; Gauguin's "visual interpretation of this primitive culture in powerful rhythmic and totemic designs ... represents an important project in book-making by this major artist" (Garvey).
