Inscribed to her editor, "Mr. Targ, avec toute ma sympathie S. de Beauvoir". William Targ (1907-1999), was an editor and then head of Putnam's before founding his own imprint, Targ Editions; he was also a noted bibliophile and collector. During his tenure at Putnam's, 1964-1978, he published translations of several of Beauvoir's works, including The Coming of Age, Force of Circumstance, Les Belles Images, The Woman Destroyed, and A Very Easy Death.
