"First and only edition. Gell visited Ithaca in the spring of 1806 accompanied by Dodwell and Henry Raikes. He was the first to study seriously the topography of Ithaca for its Homeric associations. The work was reviewed [along with Gell's Itinerary of Greece, 1810] by Byron in the Monthly Review for August, 1811" (Blackmer). The review opens: "That laudable curiosity concerning the remains of classical antiquity, which has of late years increased among our countrymen, is in no traveller or author more conspicuous than in Mr. Gell"
