Doorn, Netherlands: March 1940.
5 5/8 x 4 inches. Fine. Item #310565
A signed portrait of Kaiser Wilhelm II dating from the year before his death, affectioniately holding his great grandson, Prince Friederich Wilhelm of Prussia (1939-2015). Wilhelm dates the photograph from [Huis] Doorn, the manor house in the Netherlandish town with the same name to which the Kaiser fled following his abdication in late 1918, and where he spent the remainder of his life in exile. The photograph is accompanied by a letter of presentation from the Marshall of the Prince's Household, addressed to Miss Harriet Virginia Betz of Shaker Height, Ohio, dated 12 March 1940, acknowledging her birthday greetings, and presenting this photograph. The letter and photograph date from just two months before the German invasion of the Netherlands.
