Early American printing of the Water Poet John Taylor's (1580-1654) miniature "Thumb Bible," an epitome of the Bible illustrated with woodcuts. First published in London in 1614 and in the United States in New York in 1760 under its original title, Verbum Sempiternum, (cf. Welch 1293.1 et seq for various other early US printings). This printing not dated, though the firm of Sower (or Sauer) & Jones was located at 66 North 3rd St from 1793-1796 and Welch estimates the date as somewhere between 1794-6. The dedication to George Washington is a paraphrase of Taylor's original dedication to Queen Anne. A close reprint, termed the Ninth Edition, was published in 1798.
