The Irish nationalist and poet John Boyle O'Reilly was sent to the convict colony in Western Australia for his Fenian activities, only to escape aboard an American whaler, arriving in Philadelphia before ultimately moving on to Boston, where he settled. For fourteen years O'Reilly edited The Pilot, advocated for social justice causes not only in Ireland but for American jews and southern blacks, and became an integral part of the literary scene in Boston (ODNB).
