Hughes served one term as Governor of New York, 1907-1910. He served as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court from 1910 to 1916, a post he resigned to run, unsuccessfully, for President of the United States. He was appointed Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court by Herbert Hoover in 1930, a position he held until 1941.
