Reading: “I see with horror that I have not responded to your letter of April 25th; the time in Mannheim was terrible because of the many illnesses around me and, most importantly, the death of our dear Mrs. Hartlaub, which I still suffer from today. We will not be able to replace her; neither in Mannheim nor in the head board of "Gedok". I feel paralyzed by this loss (I believe that the few people who have interaction with her have been aware of the unquestionably clear and just humanity of this woman, I often allow myself to be guided by sympathy and antipathy always correct my judgment. Hopefully there will be a better star over my most powerful stay in Mannheim, so I will have time to speak to you in detail. Best regards to you and your wife's mother.”
Born into a prosperous Jewish family in Bingen, Germany, in 1870, Ida Dehmel, wife of German poet-writer, Richard Dehmel, was a lyric poet, feminist, and supporter of the arts, who founded the “Community of German and Austrian women artists’ associations of all artistic genres,” or “GEDOK,” which is still in existence today. In 1942, At age 72, widowed, ill, and fearing deportation by the Nazis she took her own life with an overdose of sleeping pills.
