American actor, singer, comedian, and theatrical producer, William DeWolf Hopper (1858-1935), was a lifelong baseball enthusiast whose popular and melodramatic, recitations of Ernest Thayer’s, “Casey at the Bat,” is credited for making the obscure comic poem famous, by his popular live performances, radio performances, and in recorded versions, including a short film.
