Theatrical poster by Toulouse-Lautrec for Le Chariot de Terre Cuite, an adaptation of the Sanskrit Mrichhhakatikâ, attributed to the prince and poet Shûdraka. The play was adapted here by Victor Barrucand for the Théâtre de l'Œuvre, with scenery by Toulouse-Lautrec, Louis Valtat and Albert André. Toulouse-Lautrec also designed the cover for the published edition of the play (cf. Delteil 78). The poster depicts Toulouse-Lautrec's friend, critic and actor Felix Fénéon, addressing his audience from atop an elephant, a favorite animal of the artist's.
