"I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter announcing my election as honorary member of the Erosophic Society of the University of Alabama. I beg you to present to the Society my grateful thanks for this very flattering proof of their good opinion ... Washington Irving." The Erosophic Society of the University of Alabama was founded in May 1831, just a month after the school opened. A literary society, it was the first social organization to emerge at the school.
