Item #308834

Taft writes to Democratic Senator and fellow Ohioan Atlee Pomerene two days after being appointed Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court by President Harding: "I thank you sincerely for your kind telegram of congratulation. It was good of you to send it. I was much gratified at the prompt confirmation by the Senate, a result contributed to by my Democratic friends among whom my dear Senator, I was proud to claim you. I hope to see you in the course of the next week or ten days." The nomination of Taft, a Republican, was confirmed by the Senate the same day it was made, by a vote of 61-4. He was sworn in on July 11. He remains the only person to serve both as President and Chief Justice.
