Barnum replies to an inquiry about two horses he'd offered for sale: "I have just returned from a 20 day trip to New Hampshire & find your letter. The horses are both free from ... blemishes [and] imperfections. The dapple black is very handsome– can’t be met or passed without stopping to look at him[,] the bay is good looking– not quite so handsome as the black. I rode him all last year in Central Park – my daughter rode the other. They are very superior under the saddle and both go well in harness. They are cheap at my prices, but my daughter is too ill to ride & I am going to Europe..."
