Stone, the founder of the Chicago Daily News and his son Herbert Stuart Stone of Stone and Kimball, Publishers, actor Joseph Jefferson, and preacher Frank W. Gunsaulus. On verso is written a poem by attendee Alice A. Russell incorporating the names of the guests, beginning "Why this joyous turmoil? / 'Tis to greet Dr. Doyle! / Oh, who would not hustle / To see Mr. Russell . . . ."

This was on Doyle's first series of lectures in America, organized by Major Pond, which commenced in early October 1894. On October 26, 1894, Doyle was honored at a luncheon held in the Chicago home of banker Franklin H. Head; in attendance were several notable guests, including other writers, actors, and others.
