Sarah Fielding's first and best-known novel, issued by the same publisher of her brother Henry's Joseph Andrews, and resembling the latter in format and chapter headings. Henry added a Preface for the Second Edition to assure the public that the novel was not his work but that of "a young woman … nearly and dearly allied to me." We now know that he did assist his sister and helped revise the text.
