East's Treatise is the first substantial English legal work subsequent to Blackstone's Commentaries. He was born in Jamaica in 1764, called to the bar in 1786. In 1813 East was chosen to succeed Sir Henry Russell as chief justice of the supreme court at Fort William, Bengal.
