Hilton wrote Mr. Chips at a time when British public schools were under fire, and his defense of traditionalism seemed reassuring to most. Hilton's story was made into a movie in 1939 and Robert Donat was awarded an Oscar for his portrayal of the shy and dedicated headmaster of Brookfield.
