Bridge and Hawthorne were classmates at Bowdoin and became lifelong friends, with Bridge at times offering needed encouragement and financial aid. Bridge helped finance the publication of Hawthorne's Twice-Told Tales (1837) and gave the proceeds of this popular work, his first, to Hawthorne. Bridge published his Personal Recollections of Nathaniel Hawthorne in 1893.
