The experiences of a woman who diguised herself as a man and entered the Union Army with the Army of the Potomac. She was born in New Brunswick, Canada. It is not clear when the first edition of this book appeared. probably 1864. The NUC lists only the edition of l866, and only one copy at that. Nevins mentions the fact that the book went through many editions but neglects to say when the first edition came out, and Sabin lists only the edition of l866. Edmonds went to work for the United States Christian Commission as a nurse. She served as a salesperson for Williams Publishing Company that published this book. In all editions it sold more tah 175,000 copies.
