Cooper writes to his Philadelphia publishers Carey & Hart: "Here I am and shall be until the middle of next week, when I shall pay you a visit. If you have any thing that presses send it here. Old Ironsides is far advanced, and will be finished while I am below. What has become of the first vol?" Cooper's profile of "Old Ironsides," i.e. the U.S.S. Constiution was not published until 1853, two years after Cooper's death. Carey & Hart brought out Cooper's Lives of Distinguished American Naval Officers in 1846 in two volumes, to which his question presumably pertains.
