Reading in part: "I send you a duplicate of the first volume of my new work, and proof sheets of a part of the second volume (which I believe will be somewhat larger than the first volume, but not much) ... I send you also a proof of one of the maps there is another map, an impression of which will come by the next packet. I wish the work to be published in London as soon as possible. It will appear in this country by the first of May...."
Aspinwall, the American consul in London and Irving's friend, acted as literary agent on Irving's behalf on multiple occasions, beginning in 1827 when he sold the publishing rights for the Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus to John Murray. The work Irving refers to in the present letter is his Adventures of Captain Bonneville; Aspinwall sold the rights to publisher Richard Bentley for the hefty sum of £900, and it was published in London in May of 1837.
