Item #305345

First edition, one of likely only 12 copies printed, of Lady Byron's account of her separation from Lord Byron in January 1816, written as a corrective to Thomas Moore's portrayal in his recent biography. At the time of its publication Lady Byron wrote to a friend, "My wish is to place the copy only in the hands of those who will make a discreet use of it, and prevent the possibility of its insertion in the newspapers at present. I think I shall not send out more than a dozen at first." Wise writes that "it seems likely that these dozen or so copies formed the first edition of the pamphlet, and that when the decision was arrived at to extend its circulation to a wider circle the second edition [which was condensed to 13 pp] was printed. If this suggestion be correct, the rarity of the first edition is accounted for." This copy is inscribed on the front to Lord Holland, a prominent Whig aristocrat with whose circle Byron was associated.
