Autograph letter from poet and diplomat Martthew Prior (1664-1721) to Edward Southwell (1671-1730), who at the time of this letter was commissioner for the Board of Trade and Plantations. Prior congratulates Southwell for his safe arrival in Dublin as chief secretary to the new Viceroy, the Duke of Ormond, and comments on faults found in a letter received from Southwell ("… these are faults in Stile which I hope nothing could have occasioned but the Charivari of Kettledrums, Trumpetts and Hazza's, and which I expect should be corrected as your thoughts grow more sedate …").
