Item #303616

A lovely copy of this work commemorating Townsend Harris, the first American Consul-General to live in Japan. It includes a translation of the text on the monument itself and then follows with a precis of Townsend's life and career in Japan. The first nineteen pages of this work are in English, followed by a Japanese translation. The images are captioned in both languages and depict the monument to Townsend in the Gyokusenji Temple at Kakizaki, which also served as the first American consulate.
