This novel left unfinished at Conrad's death, first appeared in The Bookman (Vol, LXVI, No. 5, 1928). Ford's introduction confirms a downside of Conrad's dedication to his art: "... for quite a long period Conrad was intensely depressed at the thought that he would be forced forever to write about the sea."
