"Views of Calcutta"

[Calcutta]: 1860s.

33 original photographs measuring 4-3/8 x 6-3/8 in. Laid down and captioned in ms. ink. Images a little faded, a couple foxed. Oblong 8vo. Half crimson morocco album, spine perished and handsomely taped over, album scuffed and worn. Item #303461

A very good set of early photographs of Calcutta and its environs. This increasingly intimate album provides a vivid sense of life in mid-century Calcutta.

Commencing with architectural shots, we see the governor's palace, the Near Market, Post Office and St Paul's Cathedral. Following that is a lively series of images capturing Bentinck Street, Chilpore Road, several of the B.Y. Docks, and another group of views near Khaligat and Barnatore. Of greater interest still is the final group of portraits that shows beggars, palki bearers, a barber and concludes with a group shot of Rohillas.
