John Quinn's copy of the first edition of Conrad's first novel. Conrad began this novel after an arduous command of the bark Otago. He worked on the manuscript intermittently over five years, nearly losing it during his time in the Congo. It was Edward Garnett at T. Fisher Unwin that ultimately pushed through its publication. Quinn was a principal supporter of Conrad and his work and purchased many of the author's manuscripts.
